You will need internet for your VLine in the following instances:
1. To update the firmware via OTA (over the air)
2. To use VLine standalone (without CarPlay or Android Auto) and run the apps and maps directly on VLine.
In such case you can either use dedicated USB modem with SIM card and data plan, or use your smartphone as mobile hotspot. More info is in this article:

If you just need to update the firmware, you can connect to your home Wifi. Make sure the signal is strong enough.
If you are using VLine for CarPlay or Android Auto with your smartphone, you do not need to provide any additional internet connection to VLine.
